Dear Edkob

merci for sharing this one, a new episodie of Eskellin, in this time 4tet and with special guest! :)

There is no doubt, this blog is one of the finest blog on internet.

Sad new about Svensson. He died on the last weekend... today it's raining and svensson made me company from his work "plays monk". A really great musician, RIP. :(

Well, life must goes on!

salut, Edkob

Enrique.

ps: keep up the good job!

Hello Enrique ;)

It is a pleasure to have friendly supports.
Roads are made for the passers-by curious about all these musics which are essential in our imaginary territories.

Moutin

EdkOb a dit…

A bientôt!

EdkOb a dit…

EdkOb,,
Why are you giving my music away for free? It costs me many thousands of dollars to make this CD.

Can you please remove these files?

Hmmm it is an interesting point to the argument put forward by Mr Eskelin about having a post where his music can be Dl for free but then again if that does not happen sooooooooo many fewer people actually get to listen and enjoy his music. The net is so huge that given the rate of up take and coverage his music would benefit from such a site? I know that after Dling music that after a time I preferr to have the CD of the music to, as an ART piece, as it were, sooo having music here to sample of his would only benefit him in the long run as one goes out and finally buys the CDs. It seems a shame that it is no longer here.
Thank you for a great blog and keep up the good work :-)

Anyone in the world can easily find samples of my work in less than two seconds by simply going to myspace or youtube. I offer samples of my CDs and many live concert videos.

There is no need for anyone else to act as my promotional agent by giving my music away.

Thanks
EE

This guy is simple overrated >

The notices are different, the passers-by appreciate the music of Ellery Eskelin a lot.

For what can we blame EE?
To be an artist?
To want to live on his(her, its) art?

I know, all this is very ambiguous and I am not the best placed to speak about it.

I flood (very modestly) this blog of music in the size(format) mp3, it is naturally to give envy(urge) to buy the musics of the artists.
And there, no doubt to be satisfied with a size(format) with a big quality loss.
Where from the strongly recommended purchase.

In the case of EE, as it is not a commercial music, and as also it is a commitment for a new shape of distribution(casting) (adapted to internet), I respect totally the artist (who can say here that his(her, its) music is not a shape of clearing of roads still little crossed(little gone through)) and his(her, its) way of being.

Saddened for the translation, I use a site of on-line translation.

What is certain, it is that it is necessary without reserves to support the steps(initiatives) of the artists which do not recover from it to industrialists of the musical production.

Later, that we appreciate or not the music is a secondary point.

Without here, we appreciate a lot.

Both words which characterize the work of EE, are honorable and deserving. It is a personal opinion(notice), it is the opinion(notice) of a passer-by.

I hope that certain passers-by discovered the music of Ellery and, why not, decided to buy his(her, its) disks.

Good listening, in passing

EdkOb a dit…

I respect without the slightest reserve the demand of EE to stop giving (even in size(format) with quality loss) all its musics.

This discussion puts in a very clear way the current debate (even if I continue to put in download of the musics): how to support and to become known musics which want to free(frank) themselves from the entertainment industry?

Mr Eskelin,

I am a passer by an no way associated with this site. I think that of course you should be supported but it is also about how you do the traditional form of marketing. Look at Steve Coleman for instance, he gives whole albums away for free on his site. Not all but most. And correct me if I am wrong but didn't Radiohead give away a free album and allowed the fans to determine how much they would pay for their discs and therefore they ended up making more money through that process than normal? The whole music marketing formula before internet is in need of change and the way the marketing is done by the large music corporations is still in this mode.
Of course your music sensibilities, intelligence and philosophy are much appreciated and you have created renewed interest in collective you have with andrea parkins and jim black and are to be commended for starting your own label .....Well done! Ok here is a scenario for you.....What if someone from a developing country who for some reason that gets less than you make in a month for a years pay has access to the internet and would like your music to listen to?? Do you think they could get an album to listen to at home via the net...
It just seems a you are being a bit tight in your patrol of such things.

Anyway enough i wish you all the best and may many people buy your albums to support your Art and may a few struggling people be able to get some for......

Ellery Eskelin a dit…

Dear Passerby,

How my music is marketed should be determined by me. I get to chose whether or not to give my music away for free or not. No one else should have the right to make that decision for me.

As to your second point perhaps you have not read clearly my previous statements. Anyone with a computer can go to MySpace and listen to the music I have put there for free. I have also posted nearly two hours of live video performances for anyone to watch.

Why is that not enough?

I believe you have missed the point entirely. The reason I originally posted here was because the person running this blog posted the entirety of a recently released double CD project that I spent many thousands of dollars to make. I asked him to remove the files which he did. He was very respectful about the whole thing and I thank him for doing so.

At the moment there is no clear business model for the distribution of this music. If giving music away for free was the magic answer then we wouldn't even be having this discussion. It would be self evident. But it's not.

EE

Anonyme a dit…

Dear EE,

Point taken entirely, and of course i defer to your right to choose when and how you distribute your music...there is never any questioning of that.
However we are all in the conundrum of how this "new" system works..... I personally believe in the value added cd product that allows more on the cd version rather than the DL version...which makes people want the CD more. I also personally think the cd is a more tangible product by which to enjoy the music. THERE is the case of the heavy Metal musician (forget his name) that started allowing DL for free but started selling his CD as Art objects, as it were, for something like $300 each, and ended up making more money in that fashion the he had previously did. They did include small booklets I am told but hmmmmmm? Yes it is a difficult situation to be in and I commend you for putting your music out there and hope you make many more recordings. And also hope you are able to make a live recording for free sometime without hitting you $-wise :-)

All the very best
passerBy

Thanks passerBy,
In fact we have just released a new live project called "One Great Night...Live". It was less expensive to make than "Quiet Music", but keep in mind...nothing is "free" to produce.

You can find a track from the recording on mySpace http://www.myspace.com/elleryeskelin

Recordings are also available for order from my website:

Thanks everyone...for the discussion, and for your understanding...
